On a recent trip to Washington DC, we had the opportunity to visit the US Marine Corps War Memorial statue, commonly referred to as the Iwo Jima Memorial. This memorial is based on the photograph that was taken by Joe Rosenthal after the battle in the Japanese Volcano Islands which is recognized as the conclusion of the American campaign in the Pacific during World War II. The lofty white pines of New England were much prized by the Royal Navy for the construction of its grandest warships. Dating from the Massachusetts Charter of 1691, prize specimens were marked with a broad arrow symbol denoting property of the Crown and shipped to England.

Lewis’ and Clark’s American Flag
Some private use is year-round, but becomes widespread on civic holidays like Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Presidents' Day, Flag Day, and on Independence Day. On Memorial Day, it is common to place small flags by war memorials and next to the graves of U.S. war veterans. Also, on Memorial Day, it is common to fly the flag at half staff until noon to remember those who lost their lives fighting in U.S. wars. World War II
The Confederacy produced a wide range of flags, although the best known is based either on the Second Confederate Navy Jack or the Battle Flag of Northern Virginia. The Southern Cross is a reminder of how the course of US history might have been very different. And, although they cannot ignore the rulings of the US Supreme Court, laws in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina protect the Confederate flag from mutilation, defamation and contempt. In those early days when the US flag had yet to be established, many featured red, white and blue stripes. The most famous of these is the Serapis flag of 1779 flown from the captured British frigate of that name by US Captain John Paul Jones. When Jones sailed her, flagless and in need of repair, into the island port of Texel, run by the neutral Dutch United Provinces, British officials declared the Serapis a pirate ship.

The first "official" flag was "the see all the banners and ensigns here Continental Colors," also known as the "Grand Union Flag," which consisted of thirteen red and white stripes and the United Kingdom’s flag in the upper-left-hand corner, also known as the canton. In North American exploration the overriding desire was to find and map the legendary waterway through the continent, which Thomas Jefferson was convinced would consist of an interlocking of the Missouri and Columbia Rivers, separated at their headwaters by a short portage. As if to test the truth of the old superstition about the revivability of reptiles, the image was restored for various purposes throughout the post-Revolutionary Era and even, with suitable emendations, on both sides during the Civil War. With this little sketch he created one of the first political cartoons in American journalism.

The Fort Sumter Flag’s design is quite distinct with 33 white stars arranged in a unique diamond pattern. Curiously, perhaps, this most famous of US flags – on display in the Museum of American History, Washington DC today – boasts 15 rather than 13 stripes, while the anthem it encouraged is sung to a British melody composed by John Stafford Smith, organist of the Chapel Royal, London. Smith had written his music to accompany To Anacreon in Heaven,a London club’s drinking song. Both the stripes (barry) and the stars (mullets) have precedents in classical heraldry.

Century-old Olympics footage brought back to life
So we visited the home of Betsy Ross and spent time learning about her contribution to the history of America.
